It survived an internal OC Transpo naming competition and was adopted soon after.įrom its inception until 2014, the term "O-Train" initially referred to the north–south diesel line. In French, it is pronounced similarly to au train, as in to travel "by train". Because Ottawa is a bilingual city, the name had to work in both English and French. The name "O-Train" was based on the classic Duke Ellington signature tune " Take the 'A' Train", which refers to the New York City Subway's A train. The system's name was proposed by Acart Communications, an Ottawa advertising agency. The O-Train network is fully grade separated and does not have any level crossings with roads. By 2026, expansions along Line 1 and the construction of Line 3 stations in the west end are expected to be complete, bringing the system's length to 64.5 km (40.1 mi), four lines and 41 stations. When Line 2 reopens in 2024, it will extend southward to Limebank station and incorporate five newly constructed stations, as well as an additional line ( Line 4) linking Line 2 to Ottawa International Airport which will replace the current bus service from route 97. Since May 2020, Stage 2 construction has temporarily shut down Line 2, with replacement bus service being offered at all stations. The O-Train system has two lines, the electrically-operated Confederation Line (Line 1) and the diesel-operated Trillium Line (Line 2). The O-Train is a light metro transit system in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, operated by OC Transpo. For the former train in South Korea, see O-Train (Korail).
